Subject: | Professional Psychologists Practice Act |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that will update the Professional Psychologists Practice Act for the first time since 1986. Since that time there have been many changes in education as well as the practice of providing mental health services to the public. The proposed changes do not expand the practice of psychology. Further, the proposed provisions would not alter the qualifications to become a psychologist. They do, however, clarify the scope of practice of psychology, eliminate current exemptions that are not in the public interest, and improve the ability of the State Board of Psychology to enforce disciplinary actions. Finally, these amendments will advance consumer protection by ensuring that all those calling psychologists and performing the functions of the profession are properly regulated by the state. |
