Subject: | Resolution: Designating “Rosie the Riveter Day” in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I intend to introduce a resolution designating May 23rd, 2017 as “Rosie the Riveter Day” in Pennsylvania. This resolution is in concert with a nation-wide effort to recognize this female icon and give homage to the millions of women who worked during World War II. Last year, a constituent who was an actual “riveter” during World War II approached me about honoring the women who worked in factories and other areas to support the war effort. I am privileged to be able to introduce this important measure. First appearing in the May 23, 1943 edition of the Saturday Evening Post, “Rosie the Riveter” became an icon of female patriotism and work ethic. Women from around the nation began to identify with Rosie. Those women included thousands of working women from this Commonwealth. From the women building ships at the Philadelphia Naval Ship Yard, to those women who assembled thousands of anti-aircraft guns in York, to the women of Allentown who produced Mack trucks, and the women of Middletown who repaired airplanes at the Harrisburg Shops, our Commonwealth owes a debt of gratitude to these powerful women. These women made an invaluable contribution to the war effort, and by honoring “Rosie the Riveter,” we honor the millions of women who embodied what Rosie stood for: strength, patriotism, sacrifice, honor and country. Please join me in honoring these women and their contribution by designating May 23rd as “Rosie the Riveter Day” in Pennsylvania. |
