Subject: | Requiring AEDs and AED Instruction in Schools |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation which creates several requirements relating to the placement of automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) in schools, as well as expanding training opportunities for staff. The bill would require that school districts make AED training available to all district employees and volunteers. Schools would be required to have a minimum of five individuals certified in AED usage for each location with an AED, have one trained individual on the premises at all times during school hours, and have an AED and an individual trained in its use at all school-sponsored athletic events. The bill would also provide for donations of AED equipment to schools. According to the American Heart Association, every minute that passes without treatment following a cardiac event decreases the chance of survival by seven to ten percent. AEDs provide lifesaving treatment following the onset of sudden cardiac arrest during those crucial moments, potentially saving many lives. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation. |
