Subject: | Resolution Designating April 5, 2017, as “National Walking Day” in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I am planning to introduce a resolution that will recognize April 5, 2017, as “National Walking Day” in Pennsylvania, which is sponsored by the American Heart Association. The American Heart Association maintains that at least 30 minutes of walking daily can help reduce an individual's risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, breast cancer, colon cancer and diabetes. Additionally, walking for at least 30 minutes daily can also improve blood pressure, blood sugar levels and blood lipid profile. Cardiovascular diseases, including heart disease and stroke, are the nation's leading cause of death and disability, with more than one million Americans suffering a new or recurrent coronary attack each year and 795,000 suffering a new or recurrent stroke. The American Heart Association projects the direct and indirect costs of cardiovascular disease, including lost productivity, are estimated to reach $690.3 billion in 2020. This event is intended to encourage Americans to become more physically active and to urge all citizens to show their support for walking and the fight against heart disease, and to commemorate this day, by taking the time to walk. By increasing awareness of the importance of physical activity to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, we can save thousands of lives each year. Please consider joining me and help raise awareness of the importance of regular physical activity in the lives of citizens across this Commonwealth. |
