Subject: | Physical Education Participation in Schools (Former HB 539) |
In the near future, I plan to reintroduce legislation that would amend the Public School Code to provide for physical education participation by students in Pennsylvania schools. Under my bill, elementary school students (kindergarten through fifth grade) would participate in a minimum of 2.5 hours of physical education each week, while students in sixth through eighth grade would participate in at least 3.75 hours of physical education instruction each week. Physical education for children serves as a direct link to good health for the rest of their lives. Without physical education, children become susceptible to childhood obesity and many diseases like chronic heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. Furthermore, students who participate in physical activities are able to build self-confidence, as well as develop skills in cooperation, teamwork and sportsmanship, all of which will continue to serve students throughout their lives. By co-sponsoring this legislation, you will join me in providing our children with a vital form of education that can lead to improved health and physical fitness. Thank you in advance for your consideration. Previous co-sponsors: YOUNGBLOOD, V. BROWN, BROWNLEE, COHEN, READSHAW, BISHOP, D. COSTA, THOMAS, McNEILL, KINSEY, MAHONEY, KIRKLAND AND MURT |
