Subject: | Designating May 9, 2017 as "Pennsylvania Health Care Information Technology Awareness Day." |
In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution designating May 9, 2017 as “Pennsylvania Health Care Information Technology Awareness Day.” Act 121 of 2012, the Pennsylvania eHealth Information Technology Act, established the Pennsylvania eHealth Partnership Authority and the means for creating a secure, electronic health information exchange in Pennsylvania. Under the federal Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, Pennsylvania was awarded $17.1 million to establish a health information exchange. It is important to note that the United States spends more than $2.9 trillion on health care a year, and seventy percent of health care transactions are paper based. A study by the Commonwealth Fund has demonstrated that the use of automated clinical decision support systems can result in the net reduction of $538 per patient per hospital stay. Therefore, the intent of this resolution is to raise awareness of health care information technology and the vital role it plays in improving health care delivery and health care outcomes. Please join in cosponsoring this resolution to promote better health care in this Commonwealth through broader adoption of advanced health care information technology and management systems. |
