House of Representatives
Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 23, 2017 11:40 AM
From: Representative Harry Readshaw
To: All House members
Subject: Co-sponsorship: Drug Offense Mandatory Minimum

Last Session, I introduced House Bill 1693 which would provide for mandatory minimum sentences for a conviction of selling opioids, among other narcotics, under the Controlled Substance Act.

The epidemic continues. Too many of our family members are succumbing to the epidemic of heroin use. In an effort to curb the sale and distribution of opiates, I will be re-introducing legislation which would make a conviction of the sale of highly addictive narcotics, such as heroin, cocaine and prescription drugs, punishable with a five year mandatory minimum.

While this legislation was originally requested by my friend/constituent who lost his son, Matthew, because of a drug overdose there has been movement within our communities to see these individuals who peddle heroin to get a mandatory minimum sentence. Most recently, earlier this month, the Montgomery County Grand Jury recommended a mandatory minimum sentence for heroin dealers.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly or call my staff, Margaret Tricarico at 717-772-5568 or mtricari@pahouse.net.

Thank you!
