Subject: | Resolution: Honoring the 200th Anniversary of Bethany A.M.E. Church |
In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution to honor the 200th anniversary of the Bethany African Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, the second oldest A.M.E. church in the world. Bethany A.M.E. Church was founded in 1817 by Elias Chase on land donated by Quakers in an area populated by freed slaves. As part of the newly-founded African Methodist Episcopal denomination, the mission of Bethany A.M.E. Church was to provide African Americans with places of free worship during a time in which segregation in religious institutions was rampant. Today, Bethany A.M.E. carries on this legacy of free worship and continues to stand on the promises of God. I ask that you please join me in co-sponsoring this timely resolution. |
