Subject: | A resolution recognizing the historical significance of Matson’s Ford and Matsonford Bridge in observance of the 240th Anniversary of the Battle of Matson’s Ford |
In the near future, we will be introducing a resolution in celebration and commemoration of the 240th anniversary of the Battle of Matson’s Ford, which took place on December 11, 1777 in present-day Conshohocken and West Conshohocken Boroughs. After the Battle of White Marsh, it was decided that the Continental Army would stay the winter at Valley Forge, located 25 miles northwest of Philadelphia. On December 11, the army marched toward Matson’s Ford, where it would cross the Schuylkill River, only to be ambushed by British troops under the command of General Charles Cornwallis. American troops were ultimately forced to retreat after a series of skirmishes, occurring at the Black Horse Inn and the Harriton House, located in Bryn Mawr. Nearly two whole divisions were able to cross the Schuylkill at Matson’s Ford, through the construction of a temporary bridge made from wagons, which was destroyed after the army was able to cross into Gulph Mills before subsequently making its way to Valley Forge. Please join us as we recognize Matson’s Ford, and now, Matsonford Bridge, and their significance in the pursuit of American independence. |
