Subject: | Temporary Protected Status for Haiti, Honduras and Nicaragua |
In the near future, we will be introducing a resolution urging the President of the United States and the Acting Secretary of the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to reconsider their recent action relating to the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for the countries of Haiti, Honduras and Nicaragua. As many of you may be aware, 8 U.S. Code §1254(a) authorizes the Secretary of DHS to designate a foreign country for TPS during instances when conditions in the country temporarily prevent it from adequately absorbing the return of its nationals. Examples of the extraordinary conditions that would warrant TPS designation include, but are not limited to, religious persecution, the existence of ongoing armed conflict (civil war) and environmental disasters (earthquakes or hurricanes). Presently, there are a total of ten countries that are designated for TPS. Acting Secretary Elaine Duke recently announced her decision to terminate the TPS designation for Haiti and Nicaragua in July and January of 2019, respectively. In addition, the expiration of TPS for Honduras has been scheduled for July 2018. Due to the widespread political, social and economic instability in the aforementioned countries, it is incumbent upon us to collectively lend our voices on behalf of the vast number of nationals that have temporarily sought refuge in our Commonwealth. We ask that you please join us as a cosponsor of this very meaningful resolution. |
