Subject: | Recognizing April 2018 as Polio Awareness Month |
In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution recognizing April 2018 as Polio Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. Anyone over the age of 50 years is likely to remember the terror of polio. A crippling, contagious disease which caused paralysis and confined patients to an iron lung – sometimes for years – just to breathe. On April 12, 1955, the Salk polio vaccine was announced and within a few years polio virtually disappeared. Polio was declared eradicated in the United State in 1979, yet is still present in some impoverished countries, mostly due to lack of vaccination. Air travel makes all Americans vulnerable to infection by an imported poliovirus and because of this risk, all Americans must continue to be vaccinated. In order to promote awareness and understanding of the life-time disabilities for polio victims, polio survivors, and their families I hope you will join me in cosponsoring this important resolution. |
