Subject: | Co-Sponsorship: Resolution that recognizes the Month of April 2018 as “Fair Housing Month” in Pennsylvania |
In the coming days, I will be introducing a Resolution that recognizes the Month of April 2018 as “Fair Housing Month” in Pennsylvania. As you may know, the Fair Housing Act instituted Federal enforcement of integration and equal opportunity in housing and has safeguarded progress in fair housing for decades. In fact, fifty years ago this April 11 ‑‑ just 7 days after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. ‑‑ President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1968 into law. The Fair Housing Act, which prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of housing based on race, color, religion, or national origin, is Title VIII of that law. The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development is currently advancing housing choice and offering homelessness assistance and disaster recovery assistance in communities nationwide. Here at home, the Department of Human Services administers the Homeless Assistance Program in counties throughout our Commonwealth. As noted, the Homeless Assistance Program helps to assure that homelessness in Commonwealth can be avoided and people who are homeless can find refuge and care and homeless and near homeless clients are assisted by the agency in moving toward self-sufficiency With that said, it is for these reasons and more that I am introducing this Resolution. As such please join me in co-sponsoring this important Resolution. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office at (717) 787-3480. |
