Subject: | 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day |
In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day, as well as recognizing and honoring the valor and service of each and every veteran on Veterans Day. In 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I, then known as “the Great War.” Commemorated in many countries as Armistice Day the following year, November 11th became a federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became known as Veterans Day. Since the founding of our nation, tens of millions of Americans have served in the Armed Forces to defend our nation in times of war and protect our nation in times of peace. We owe the brave men and women who have served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard – and their families that support them – a debt of gratitude that can never be fully repaid. Please join me in marking the 100th anniversary of the Armistice of World War I and paying tribute to all American veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime. |
