To: All House members
Subject: Co-Sponsorship of Resolution Honoring East Stroudsburg University on its 125th Anniversary

Did you know that, in 1970, the theatre group of East Stroudsburg State College was recognized internationally as one of the top five American college and university theatre groups? These types of distinctions are being celebrated all this year as East Stroudsburg University (ESU) marks the 125th anniversary of its founding. Indeed, in 2018, a planned yearlong celebration of the rich history and culture of the university has been underway, involving historical photos and exhibits, a founder’s day social, a community dinner, and much more.

ESU was first begun in 1893 as a private preparatory school for teachers known as the East Stroudsburg Normal School – as one of the Commonwealth’s 12 normal schools, which were state-licensed private teacher training schools. In 1920, the school’s ownership was transferred to the State, thereby becoming the East Stroudsburg State Normal School. In 1927, upon being granted the right to confer Bachelor of Science degrees in education and elementary education, the school became known as East Stroudsburg State Teachers College. Then, in 1960, the college further evolved with additional curricula, thus making the school a comprehensive state college known as East Stroudsburg State College. In 1983, under the authorization of the State System of Higher Education, this institution assumed its current name – East Stroudsburg University.

Today, as one of the 14 universities that comprise the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, East Stroudsburg University has grown to offer 57 undergraduate programs, 21 master’s programs, and 1 doctoral program.

Please join us in honoring ESU’s students, alumni, administration, faculty, staff and local community, which have joined together to proudly celebrate 125 years of success for this distinguished institution of higher education.
