Subject: | Identification for Ammunition Purchases |
Despite the fact that young people accounted for only 2.2 percent of all deaths in the U.S. in 2016, they accounted for 31 percent of all gun deaths and almost 50 percent of all gun-related homicides. Furthermore, young African Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans face significantly higher than average risks of being a victim of a gun-related homicide. Currently, ammunition cannot be sold to anyone who the seller has reasonable cause to believe is younger than 18 or 21 depending on the type of ammunition. However, sellers are not required to check a buyer’s identification to verify his or her age. My legislation would require that all individuals present an official form of photographic identification in order to purchase firearm ammunition in the Commonwealth. This simple requirement will help prevent ammunition from getting into the wrong hands without infringing on any individual’s Second Amendment rights. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation to help put an end to the tragic gun deaths of our youth. |
