Subject: | Constitutional Amendment Restricting Debt |
So-called “corporate welfare” often sparks taxpayer outrage when public tax resources are used to finance private enterprises or initiatives in whole or in part. This questioning of the use of tax moneys has increased due to recent events associated with professional sports teams who were helped in the financing of their stadiums by taxpayers. While no one should question anyone’s 1st Amendment right of free speech, the voices of taxpayers also need to be heard. Accordingly, I plan to introduce a proposed amendment to the Pennsylvania Constitution to prohibit the use of Commonwealth tax revenues (through debt or other financing) from being used to finance or aid in the financing of sports facilities of any professional sports organization. As this is a proposed Constitutional amendment, voters would be given the ultimate decision as to whether they agree or disagree with this public policy. I hope you will join me in this pro-taxpayer proposal. |
