MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 8, 2019 02:38 PM
From: Representative Brian Kirkland
To: All House members
Subject: Violent Crime Survivors’ Assistance and Grief Support Day

Violent crimes can take away family and friends in the blink of an eye, affecting the survivors and their loved ones for years. For those compassionate men and women who provide a variety of supports to survivors, the daily realization of how much violent crime can destroy is always in the back of their mind as they try to assist in any way they can.

I know from my experiences in Delaware County that all crimes leave behind a trail of survivors - in 2016 alone, Delaware County saw 2,120 violent crimes, including 38 murders, with the entire state experiencing over 34,000 violent crimes. Survivors of these terrible crimes need and deserve compassionate support services to help them cope and recover. My resolution honors those who provide counseling, substance abuse treatment, mental health services, advocacy and other supports to survivors, while encouraging local governments to provide resources that will build links between the community, law enforcement and support services.

It is our duty as legislators to recognize our constituents who have lost so much to violence, as well as those who have stepped forward to provide much needed support. Please join me in in recognizing the bravery of crime survivors and the dedication of our fellow Pennsylvanians who provide vital support services to them.
