Subject: | Designating February 26, 2019, as “Spay Day” in Pennsylvania |
Most of us remember the conclusion of the Price is Right when Bob Barker would look into the camera and tell us “to help control the pet population. By making such a public service announcement, Mr. Barker appears to have had significant effect on the stray pet population as euthanasia numbers have fallen both in total number and as a share of the total pet population in the United States. This simple PSA and the historical trends suggest there is great value in public leaders reminding people to take these simple steps. To recognize and encourage spaying and neutering as a means to address pet overpopulation, veterinarians, animal care and control organizations, national and local animal welfare organizations, and private individuals have come together over the past several decades to annually declare a “World Spay Day.” In an ongoing attempt to support these efforts, please join me in co-sponsoring a resolution designating February 26, 2019, as “Spay Day” in Pennsylvania. While progress has been made on this front, pet overpopulation continues to be a problem that impacts Pennsylvania’s communities. The costs of managing these overpopulation impacts public and private organizations millions of dollars annually. Spaying and neutering of pets has proven to be a successful and cost-effective means to control this problem. If you have any questions about this resolution, please contact Geoff Brace (gbrace@pahouse.net) in my office. This resolution (HR665) was introduced in 2018 and was adopted by a 190-0 vote.
