Subject: | Benefits for Paid Fire Chiefs |
As you may know, fire chiefs are excluded from collective bargaining units within their municipalities. In some cases, these individuals earn less than the firefighters they supervise. We need to resolve this discrepancy, so we can continue to attract qualified and determined candidates for this important position. This legislation would amend the Police Officers - Benefits to Non-Union Officers Act to include paid fire chiefs and heads of fire departments previously removed from the bargaining unit. Thus, they will receive no less than the same salary increases, including fringe benefits (excludes overtime and holiday pay) as the highest-ranking fire officer participating in the collective bargaining unit. Please note, my bill would exclude fire chiefs in first and second class cities. It is our duty as public servants to ensure equitable wages. Please join me in supporting fire chiefs in the Commonwealth. This was previously approved by the House in the 2015-2016 session as HB1988. |
