Subject: | "Juneteenth National Freedom Day" |
Previously, we passed House Resolution 322 recognizing "Juneteenth National Freedom Day" for 2012. In each session since the 2013-2014 legislative session a bill was passed by the House to name Juneteenth as an annual observance on June 19th. In the near future, I plan to re-introduce this legislation that will establish "Juneteenth National Freedom Day" as an annual observance for the Commonwealth. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Today, this commemorates African-American freedom by emphasizing education and achievement. It is recognized annually in approximately 37 states nationwide. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation. |
