Subject: | National School Breakfast Week |
Did you know that for children, eating school breakfast helps them to maintain a healthy weight, have better concentration and memory, be more alert, and to reach higher levels of achievement in reading and math, as well as to score higher on standardized tests and have higher grades? Not only that, but providing breakfast for children at school is associated with lower rates of absenteeism, fewer behavioral problems, a reduced number of nurse’s office visits, and a more positive learning environment. With this in mind, my resolution will recognize the week of March 4 through 8, 2019, as “National School Breakfast Week” in Pennsylvania. This week is observed annually to highlight the many benefits for children of having a healthy school breakfast and, accordingly, to increase participation in the school breakfast program. The School Breakfast program provides healthy breakfast options in age-appropriate serving sizes to 14.6 million children each school day across America. Please join me in celebrating this special week as we recognize and support the importance of childhood nutrition and the correlation between existing school breakfast plans and children’s focus on learning. |
