| The military trains its brave men and women in skills applicable to at least 962 civilian occupations, according to an estimate by the U.S. Department of Labor. Yet more than half of veterans say they found it difficult to transition back to civilian life, and about 80 percent do not have jobs when they leave military service. Jobs requiring a professional or occupational license can offer a great opportunity for veterans to apply military education and experience toward a family-sustaining career. Unfortunately, however, many licensing boards across the nation do not recognize official documentation of military training as proof of qualifications for licensure. I believe that Pennsylvania should be a national leader in helping veterans transition to civilian life and in streamlining the licensure process for veterans with relevant skills and experience. That is why I am introducing a resolution urging Pennsylvania’s 29 licensing boards and commissions to review how military education and training could partially or completely fulfill licensure requirements, develop suggested pathways to licensure for veterans and generally encourage licensure among Pennsylvania veterans. The resolution urges the licensing boards and commissions to collaborate with the U.S. Department of Defense and our Department of Military and Veterans Affairs in conducting this review. It is my hope that this resolution will help get more veterans into licensed occupations, supporting veterans and their families while strengthening Pennsylvania’s economy overall. Please join me in supporting expanded licensure for qualified veterans who risked their lives defending our Commonwealth and country. |
