| Subject: | Amending the Unfair Insurance Practices Act - Vehicle Rental Companies |
| In the near future I intend to introduce legislation that would prevent insurance companies from directing consumers to a specific vehicle rental company. Insurance companies that handle temporary replacement rentals tend to direct customers toward national vehicle rental companies with whom they have contracts, eliminating competition from smaller, locally owned businesses. Many times consumers are unaware that they can choose a local car rental business if the service and price is comparable. My legislation will prevent insurance companies from directing consumers to use designated vehicle rental companies when obtaining their insurance rentals by requiring insurers to disclose information orally and in writing or electronically, at the time a claim is made, that the consumer has a right to choose a competitive vehicle rental company. My legislation will provide consumers with more options and allow local companies to compete with national companies. I hope you will join me in cosponsoring this important piece of legislation. |
