Subject: | Resolution honoring the work of retiring United Steelworkers International President Leo W. Gerard |
This July, the United Steelworkers (USW), headquartered in Pittsburgh, bids farewell to its president, Leo W. Gerard, after 18 years of stellar leadership and an unbending commitment to workers across the Commonwealth and beyond. The USW helped build Pittsburgh and America, and under President Gerard’s leadership, it is the largest industrial union in North America, dominant in steel, paper, forestry products, aluminum, tire and rubber, mining, glass, chemicals, petroleum, in addition to a growing membership in health care, education, and public services. Mr. Gerard helped forge the first trans-Atlantic union, Workers Uniting, and has built labor alliances around the world. Taking office and thrust into guiding the USW through a tumultuous time defined by unfair trade, Leo has epitomized a Steelworker rallying cry, urging his members to “stand up, fight back” to be sure their hard-earned wages, benefits, and retirement security are never lost. Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania have been blessed by his commitment to the USW and to working families across our state, nation, and world. Please join us in celebrating the contributions of President Leo W. Gerard, and wishing him well on his retirement. |
