Subject: Recognizing October as LGBT History Month in Pennsylvania

In 1994, Rodney Wilson created LGBT History Month to coincide with National Coming Out Day. This occasion, celebrated every October, is dedicated to the celebration and teaching of LGBTQ history. LGBT History Month provides an opportunity for individuals to learn more about influential figures that have played a significant role in the LGBTQ community and the continuing fight for equality.

In Pennsylvania, numerous events and prominent figures have played a critical role for the advancement of civil rights. From the openly gay Billy Strayhorn who grew up in Pittsburgh composing musical arrangements for performances that challenged racist representations of people of color, to Governor Milton Shapp who signed an executive order to end discrimination based on sexual orientation for employees in state government, Pennsylvania’s history is rich with civil rights advocates who played important roles for the advancement of the LGBTQ community.

To commemorate our history and the incredible achievements of those involved in the LGBTQ community, I ask that you support this legislation recognizing October as LGBT History Month. By preserving and celebrating our history, we can promote a culture of tolerance, acceptance, and non-discrimination for all Pennsylvanians.
