| Subject: | Resolution Honoring the 100th Birthday of the American Legion and Honoring American Legion Post 471 and the Legacy of General Carl Spaatz |
| In the near future I will be introducing a resolution honoring the 100th birthday of the American Legion and honoring American Legion Post 471 and the legacy of General Carl Spaatz. The American Legion came to life on March 15, 1919, in Paris, France when war-weary members of the American Expeditionary Force came together for what became known as the Paris Caucus. On September 16, 1919, the American Legion was chartered by Congress as a patriotic veterans’ organization focusing on service to veterans, servicemembers, and the community. Just months later American Legion Post 471 in Boyertown, Pennsylvania held its first meeting on November 20, 1919. General Carl Spaatz, the father of the modern air force and the first chief of staff of the United States Air Force, was a chartered member of Post 471. He is a source of immense pride for the Post and the community of Boyertown where Post 471 continues to serve. The American Legion and Post 471 have served our nation for 100 years. They have supported wounded comrades, helped widows and orphans, and honored the fallen. They deserve our recognition and honor as they transition into their next century of serving our nation and our veterans. Please join me in co-sponsoring this commemorative resolution. |
