Subject: | Designating February 2020 as Esports Month |
Video games are no longer just a hobby for children and teenagers. In the past 20 years, competitive video gaming or Esports has become a global juggernaut with projected global revenues of $1.8 billion by the end of 2021. This growing spectator sport will have a global audience of nearly 650 million people by the end of 2020. For this reason, I am introducing legislation to recognize February 2020 as Esports Month in Pennsylvania. The benefits of esports are numerous and diverse. Esports can improve attention, increase problem solving skills, accelerate technological fluency and foster interest in STEM subject areas. In addition to these, many gamers with disabilities are afforded the opportunity to participate competitively in ways that they may not otherwise be able to do with traditional sports. Esports have already proven to be beneficial for colleges and universities, as many have esports teams of their own and are able to offer scholarships and aid for students to attend. Please join with me as we recognize the importance and foster the growth of esports in Pennsylvania. |
