Subject: | Thyroid Awareness Month |
The thyroid plays a vital role in the growth and development of the human body and is a key factor in the regulation of metabolism, yet approximately 20 million Americans suffer from a thyroid disorder. People affected may experience an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), thyroid cancer, or other conditions that disrupt healthy thyroid functions. Such disorders can cause a variety of symptoms that can negatively impact a person’s quality of life, such as unexplained weight gain or weight loss, fatigue, anxiety, and irritability. It is important that individuals with thyroid disorders receive a prompt diagnosis so that appropriate treatment can be provided, and symptoms can be reduced or even eliminated. For this reason, I will be introducing a resolution to designate the month of January 2020 as “Thyroid Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. Please join me in spreading awareness of thyroid disorders to improve treatment outcomes and quality of life for Pennsylvanians. |
