MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 29, 2020 11:03 AM
From: Representative Joshua D. Kail
To: All House members
Subject: Anti-Grandstanding Bill

In the near future I will be introducing legislation that would prohibit any individual who holds the office of Attorney General, State Treasurer, or Auditor General from filing a nomination petition for the Office of Governor. Furthermore, my legislation would restrict an individual’s eligibility for the Office of Governor until two years after holding or exercising the aforementioned row offices.

Statewide row offices are inherently non-political positions – they focus solely on the non-partisan issues of justice and finance. These offices should be respected as the critical and impactful positions that they are, rather than a grandstanding platform to boost one’s campaign position for higher office.

By removing the blurred lines between the non-partisan office and the incompatible role of candidate for the Office of Governor, we would avoid the grandstanding and political manipulation of timing to benefit political designs.

In our current politically volatile environment, it is more important than ever that the citizens of the Commonwealth can trust our row officers to be fair and impartial stewards who are singularly focused on the jobs to which they were entrusted.

Please join me in sponsoring this important legislation.
