Subject: | Food Desert Awareness Month – June 2020 |
Access to supermarkets that provide fresh fruit, vegetables, and other healthy food items is essential to a healthy populace. Without it, people are more likely to suffer and die from ailments resulting from poor nutrition, such as diabetes and heart disease. Unfortunately, this is the reality for about two million Pennsylvanians, including 500,000 children, who live in “food deserts,” which are areas that lack proper access to healthy foods. In an effort to bring awareness to this issue, I will be introducing a resolution designating June 2020 as “Food Desert Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. Something as simple and necessary as access to fresh, healthy food should not be a luxury for some. It is my hope that bringing awareness to this issue will be the first step in resolving it. Please join me in support of this important resolution. |
