MEMORANDUM

Subject: Resolution Recognizing August 26, 2020 as "Women's Equality Day" in Pennsylvania

In 1971, the United States Congress designated August 26 as “Women’s Equality Day.” This recognition was made at the behest of Congresswoman Bella Abzug of New York, a leader in the women’s movement, to commemorate the historic passage and ratification of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution which granted women the right to vote.

Many women advocates - Susan B. Anthony, Lucy Stone, and Alice Paul, to name a few - organized, wrote, spoke, and picketed in order to gain voting rights for all women. Extraordinary women today are following in the footsteps of their foremothers by continuously fighting for equality for all women in America. It is their goal to ensure women’s rights grow beyond the right to vote.

In honor of the great strides that have been made, and the fight that still lies ahead, I will be offering a resolution in celebration of “Women’s Equality Day.” My resolution commemorates the brave women who fought for their right to vote over 100 years ago and encourages the women promoting women’s equality today to continue fighting. As a steward of equality and justice, it is my hope that you will join me in recognizing August 26, 2020, as “Women’s Equality Day” in Pennsylvania.
