Subject: | Designating the South Lawn as the “Irvis Equality Circle” |
2020 marks the 150th anniversary of ratification of the 15th Amendment and the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment that together guarantee United States citizens the right to vote regardless of race, color, previous condition of servitude, or sex. The Historic 8th Ward of Harrisburg was a major site for pushing the ratification of these amendments and is the current location of the Pennsylvania State Capitol Complex. A new monument will be constructed outside of the Irvis Office Building to honor these amendments and the Historic 8th Ward, and I am introducing legislation to build on the message this monument sends. My bill will officially designate the lawn of the Speaker K. Leroy Irvis Office Building (the South Lawn of the Pennsylvania State Capitol Complex) as the “Irvis Equality Circle.” I now ask you to support this legislation. Join me in paying tribute to our past and honoring the invaluable right to vote. |
