| Subject: | Military Spouse License Portability |
| In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation aimed at providing military spouses greater ease in obtaining the transfer of their professional license to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The lives of military families are marked by frequent deployments, relocations and extended periods of single parenthood. These unique circumstances pose a significant obstacle to the maintenance of professional licenses, and lead to scenarios where the military spouse ends up forgoing their career. The process to transfer a recognized license from state to state can take a substantial amount of time, and often requires extensive documentation depending on the requirements of specific statutes and regulations. There is a reason for certain professions to have licensure, and understandably there are also reasons why the vetting of a license transfer request is a thorough process. However, military spouses are in unquestionably unique positions where relocations can happen suddenly and unexpectedly. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Pennsylvania is one of only three states that provide no general recognition in statute for military spouses. We cannot be the last state to leave military families in this position. Members of our armed forces are given high honor and regard for their service and sacrifice, and their families are people trying to make a living while supporting one another and their country. Let us recognize their sacrifices, and help them to know that the Commonwealth supports them. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation and supporting our military families. |
