Subject: | Arthrogryposis Awareness |
We will be introducing a resolution shortly to again recognize June 30 as Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita Awareness Day in the Commonwealth, and ask that you consider lending your support by co-sponsoring it to help increase awareness of this challenging condition. Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC) is a prenatally developing condition that occurs in about 1 in 3,000 births. It is caused by various conditions or syndromes, and there are nearly 400 distinct types of AMC recognized. All of them are characterized by severe or permanently restricted motion in at least three joints in two separate parts of the body. These can be in any joint: ankles, knees, hips, fingers, wrists, elbows and spine. AMC is not curable, and in extreme cases can shorten lives, but it is treatable though physical, occupational and speech therapies and surgical intervention, so attention and awareness are vital in responding to it. We hope you will join us in helping increase awareness of this challenging and commonly misunderstood condition. |
