Subject: | Justice for DUI Casualties |
On January 19, 2014, 15 year old Zachary Gonzalez was struck and killed by a vehicle while its driver was under the influence of cocaine and prescription medications. Although the driver faced charges related to driving under the influence, he received no charges for killing Zachary Gonzalez. This failure of justice took place because it was determined that the driver’s intoxication was not the cause of the death. My bill will address this injustice by making sure that someone who seriously injures or kills another person while driving under the influence is charged with a second degree misdemeanor, even if it is ruled that the driver’s intoxication was not the cause of the injury. By creating these new penalties, we can ensure that this technicality will not allow future offenders to avoid justice. Please join me in supporting the safety of Pennsylvania’s families.
