Subject: Student Loan Forgiveness for Nurses and Private Care Employees Fighting COVID-19

As the COVID-19 outbreak continues to spread, every person has a role to play in keeping our families and communities as safe and healthy as possible. However, nurses and employees of personal care and assisted living facilities have been forced on the front lines of this crisis. While many of us stay safe at home, these individuals potentially expose themselves to the virus every day, risking their own health, in order to save lives.

In light of the sacrifices these caring individuals have made in past crises and continue to make during this pandemic, I am introducing legislation to provide Pennsylvania nurses and personal care and assisted living facility employees with student loan forgiveness. This crisis has shown how critically important having highly competent nurses and care workers are for our public health. Through a loan forgiveness program, we can reward and support these front-line personnel working around the clock while also encouraging more people to enter the caring professions. If we are going to rely so heavily on nurses and those working in facilities helping our most vulnerable Pennsylvanians, we must take action to show how much we value and appreciate their contributions.

Nurses and personal care workers rarely get the recognition they deserve for the vital work they do during normal times, making it more important than ever that we say thank you to them for being the everyday heroes we need. Please join me in showing your gratitude by cosponsoring this important legislation.

Introduced as HB226
