Subject: | Living Donor Protection Act |
I will be re-introducing legislation which prohibits discrimination in the provision of life, accident, and health insurance based on the status of an insured as a living organ or tissue donor; authorizes the provision of family leave to provide care during transplantation preparation and recovery from surgery related to organ or tissue donation; and directs the Secretary of Health to develop and distribute informational materials relating to the benefits of being a living organ or tissue donor. Every year, thousands of Americans donate kidneys, livers, and other organs to save the lives of family members, friends, and even complete strangers facing life-threatening illnesses. Organ donation saves lives and saves money, cutting health care costs by as much as two-thirds and saving Medicare millions of dollars every year. The Living Donor Protection Act will ensure that people who make the life-saving choice to become organ donors will not face economic roadblocks because of their decision. Under this legislation, living organ donors will be able to access insurance and use the medical leave they need, giving donors more certainty and, it is our hope, encourage more people in the Commonwealth to give the incredible gift of organ donation. Please join me by co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation. HB 924 Toohil (2019-2020) |
