| American democracy has endured because of peaceful transitions of power between incoming and outgoing Presidents, and attempts to disrupt the democratic process and deny the will of voters cannot be tolerated. Since the November election, the Trump campaign and others who hoped to overturn the results of the election filed more than 50 lawsuits in Pennsylvania and other critical states, and only one lawsuit was decided in their favor. Over 126 Republican members of Congress and Republican officials from 17 states supported a shocking attempt by Texas’ Attorney General to discard the results of the election in Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. The motion was promptly denied by the US Supreme Court for a lack of standing, but this was a brazen and partisan attack on our democracy. As time has passed and the results of the election have become even more clear, attempts to cast doubt on and ultimately overturn the election have become desperate. After the Supreme Court’s decision, the chair of the Texas Republican Party even implied that secession from the US was a viable course of action. These attempts to undermine a legitimate election is the antithesis of how American democracy is supposed to function. My resolution serves to remind my colleagues and other elected officials of the definition of sedition. The escalation of rhetoric against the democratic process cannot continue, and we must uphold our oaths to obey and defend the Constitution.
