| Subject: | “Rosie the Riveter” Day in Pennsylvania |
| During World War II, millions of women answered the call to enter the workforce and build the equipment American soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen needed for the war. These women made an invaluable contribution to the war effort. Designating March 21, 2021 as Rosie the Riveter Day” in Pennsylvania honors the millions of women who embodied what Rosie stood for: strength, patriotism, sacrifice, honor and country. In another show of appreciation of what these women accomplished, this past fall Congress awarded “Rosie the Riveter” with a Congressional Gold Medal. The honor collectively awards the Congressional Gold Medal to all women who entered the workforce during World War II and aided in the war efforts. “Rosie the Riveter” became an icon of female patriotism and work ethic. Those women included thousands of working women from this Commonwealth. During the war, Pennsylvania women built ships at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, worked steel mills in the Mon Valley, assembled thousands of anti-aircraft guns in York, built Mack trucks in Allentown, and repaired airplanes in Middletown at the Harrisburg Shops. Our Commonwealth owes a debt of gratitude to these powerful women. I ask for your support and to join me in co-sponsoring this resolution to honor these women and their contributions by designating March 21, 2021 as “Rosie the Riveter Day” in Pennsylvania. |
