MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 23, 2020 03:08 PM
From: Representative Mike Zabel
To: All House members
Subject: Prohibiting Undetectable Firearms

For years there has been intense debate concerning the issue of 3D-printing firearms. On January 24, 2020 a group of 20 states sued the federal government over rules that could allow the sharing of 3D-printed gun blueprints online. Without necessary regulations of these firearms, individuals ineligible to possess firearms under state and federal law would easily be able to get their hands on these deadly weapons.

Unlike traditional firearms, 3D-printed firearms are completely undetectable by traditional security measures. In addition to being undetectable, they are being printed without serial numbers, making them near impossible to trace. In order to ensure the safety of our friends, families, and neighbors, I will be introducing legislation that will ban the manufacturing, sale and possession of undetectable firearms, including 3D-printed firearms.

While these devices should already be illegal under current federal law, it falls on members of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives to take action and protect Pennsylvanians from the danger these firearms pose to public safety. I ask that you join me in co-sponsoring this legislation to give our Commonwealth’s law enforcement officials the tools that they need to protect our residents from untraceable and undetectable firearms.

Introduced as HB414
