Subject: | Protection from Abuse Hearings: Unpaid Leave |
In the United States, one in four women and one in seven men has suffered severe physical violence by an intimate partner. In Pennsylvania, in the last year alone, 47,861 new temporary protection from abuse (PFA) orders were filed, with Delaware County having the second highest number of filings per capita when compared to other Pennsylvania counties. Despite our efforts to protect victims of abuse, 123 Pennsylvanians lost their lives to domestic violence in 2018. I firmly believe that one of the most important duties of government is to keep our people safe from harm. For this reason, I will introduce legislation to support victims of domestic abuse in their attempts to receive a PFA order to protect them from further abuse. My legislation will require employers to provide unpaid leave for employees who attend a PFA hearing if the employee is a victim or is providing testimony on behalf of a victim. This will help to ensure that all victims of domestic abuse are able to make their case and receive the protection they deserve. Please join me in supporting and further protecting victims of domestic abuse. |
