Subject: | Carbon Monoxide Detectors in Schools |
Over the years, there have been a disturbing number of reports of carbon monoxide poisoning occurring in schools. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas produced by incomplete combustion in fuel-burning devices such as gas-powered furnaces. CO poisoning may cause dizziness, vomiting, confusion, and more. Further, high levels of CO inhalations can cause loss of consciousness and even death. Most concerning is that CO poisoning can be difficult to diagnose because the symptoms mimic other illnesses. The need for CO detectors in schools is great. The health and safety of our children in school is of paramount importance. School administrators, teachers and other school employees all deserve the same protections as well, which is why I am introducing legislation that would require that any school building with fossil-fuel burning heating systems or appliances must be equipped with CO detectors. If installing these critical, life-saving devices in our schools helps to save even the life of just one child or school employee, this effort will have more than proven its value to us as parents and family members. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation that would seek to ensure the health and safety of our children and school employees. |
