Subject: | Firearm Restraining Orders |
On February 4, 2018, Nikolas Cruz entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School with an assault rifle, killing 17 people and injuring 15 more. Police had been called to Cruz’s home on 39 separate occasions over seven years, and he had been repeatedly accused by neighbors of killing and torturing animals. Despite all of these warning signs, Cruz was legally able to purchase the assault rifle which he used to end 17 innocent lives. For this reason, my legislation will permit law enforcement officers, family and household members, and certain health professionals to petition the court for a firearm restraining order to prevent a dangerous individual from possessing or purchasing a firearm, ammunition, or another type of weapon. Any individual subject to a firearm restraining order will be granted due process to ensure that no responsible firearm owner will lose their right to possess a firearm. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation to protect residents of the Commonwealth from senseless firearm violence without infringing on the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens. |
