MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 19, 2021 01:34 PM
From: Representative Liz Hanbidge
To: All House members
Subject: COVID-19 Childcare Assistance

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, our essential workers are doing their best to keep Pennsylvania up and running. However, parents who are essential workers remain concerned about the cost of childcare, which is necessary for them to perform most jobs, such as nursing or restaurant work. Workers deserve to know that their children will be taken care of while they are on the frontline and should not have to bear this tremendous, and often unattainable, cost alone.

To help alleviate the stress on essential workers and their children throughout the state, I am proposing two bills to help provide assistance for childcare costs. My first bill would establish a grant program to help defray the cost of childcare for Pennsylvania’s essential workers, while my second bill would be income-based and establish another grant program to reimburse childcare costs incurred as a result of the pandemic for parents and caretakers ineligible for the Child Care Works Program.

As legislators, we must ensure that we are doing all we can to help our constituents and their families. Access to affordable childcare for the workers keeping our Commonwealth moving during these extraordinary times is vital to our economy and to the health and safety of our loved ones. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation.
