In 2019, 1,541 people lost their lives to gun violence in Pennsylvania. These unnecessary deaths left children without their parents, parents without their children, and forced communities to suffer and grieve in the wake of every shot fired. Gun violence is an increasingly concerning public health crisis and continues to aggressively affect our lives and the lives of those we love every day.To better address gun violence in our state, we will be introducing legislation that would require a selection committee to accept proposals for a non-partisan research center for gun-related violence in Pennsylvania. Independent colleges, as well as state-related and state-owned institutions, would be eligible to submit proposals to host the research center. The center would be responsible for working with the Executive and Legislative branches to identify, implement, and evaluate innovative gun violence prevention policies and programs. It would also be responsible for conducting interdisciplinary research, all of which would be made freely available to the public. As legislators, it is our duty to protect and serve our constituents to the best of our ability. The creation of a research center for gun-related violence would create new opportunities to help us combat the gun violence plaguing our home. Please join us in supporting this important piece of legislation so that we can continue to create a safer, stronger Pennsylvania. |
