MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 26, 2022 01:38 PM
From: Representative Milou Mackenzie
To: All House members
Subject: Education Money to Follow the Child

For too long, education funding in the Commonwealth has been distributed with institutions and buildings in mind, and not our precious children. Currently, the Pennsylvania Constitution requires the “maintenance and support” of public education in the Commonwealth. While this is a noble goal, too many students are falling through the cracks and do not have the opportunity or means to get ahead.

Our constitutional commitment to education, instead, ought to focus on empowering students to reach their fullest potential.

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation in the form of a constitutional amendment that will put our children first when it comes to the way we fund education in the Commonwealth. This amendment, if adopted, will directly fund each child’s education at the school they choose, ensuring money follows the child so educational freedom and opportunity is accessible for all families.

Similar efforts are underway in other states across the country, and it’s time to add Pennsylvania to the list so that all students and families have access to a high-quality education.

Please join me in truly putting all Pennsylvania children first.
