Subject: | Constitutional Amendment Eliminating a Separate Ballot for Judicial Retention |
In the near future, I will be reintroducing Senate Bill 413 printer’s number 432. Currently, the Pennsylvania Constitution requires a separate ballot or a separate column on voting machines for the retention of justices, judges, and justices of the peace. This can cause confusion for voters and also incurs unnecessary additional costs for counties to print extra ballot pages. If these positions can fit on the ballot, there should be no need for an additional page. This legislation will address the problem by introducing a simple amendment to the Pennsylvania Constitution to eliminate this requirement. Last session, this language was passed by the General Assembly with broad bipartisan support and would need to pass a second consecutive time to be presented to the voters as required under Article XI of the Pennsylvania Constitution. I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this legislation. |
