Subject: Fostering a Smooth Transition for Graduation
 
In the near future, we will be re-introducing Senate Bill 1079 to keep students on track to graduate high school who are either experiencing homelessness or are in foster care.

There are several reasons that may hamper a student experiencing homelessness or are in foster care from graduating, such as:
  • Change of schools before earning full credit
  • Failure of a new school to honor credits earned
  • Inability to take a required course at a new school
Children in foster care may attend multiple schools in a year or over the course of their academic career.  This vital legislation will remedy these roadblocks by requiring schools to designate a point person for the student.  This point person developed in part with the aid of the Department of Education will review past transcripts and provide the essential support needed to aid student graduation in a timely manner.
