Subject: | Veterans Preference Clarification |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that would clarify our Veterans Preference Law. Under Title 51 (Military Affairs), Veterans Preference requires service members to complete their first term of service with “other than a dishonorable discharge.” Under the current interpretation, a Veteran who served honorably but was discharged with a disability before completing their initial obligation would NOT be eligible for Veterans Preference. This unfortunately punishes Veterans who cannot not meet the commitment through no fault of their own. My legislation would add an exemption for those with a disability discharge and would ensure that veterans with medical discharges are receiving the preference when seeking careers with the Commonwealth. Please join me in sponsoring this legislation. Please contact Nate Silcox of my staff if you have any questions. |
