Subject: | March 21, 2022 - World Down Syndrome Day in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I will be reintroducing a resolution designating March 21, 2022, as “World Down Syndrome Day” in Pennsylvania. Individuals diagnosed with Down Syndrome have a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21, which alters the course of development for those diagnosed. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately one in every 700 babies born in the United States is born with Down Syndrome. This comes out to approximately 6,000 per year. In fact, Down Syndrome is one of the most common chromosomal conditions in the world. Over the years, due to changing attitudes, these individuals have gone on to be productive, influential, and inspirational members of society. Some are global influencers, some fashion designers, many have gone on to become accomplished musicians, teachers, leaders of nonprofits and even small business entrepreneurs. They are absolutely incredible. Additionally, due to advances in in medicine and long-term care, the number of individuals with Down Syndrome has risen with many individuals across the world now living past the age of 50. This shows that when given the opportunities associated with early intervention, therapies, quality education and support from families and the community, individuals with Down Syndrome can thrive. Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution. |
